Q: “I see a lot of television reports about airconditioning companies. How do I know if a contractor has a license? Is it really important that the new equipment being installed in my home has a permit and gets inspected?”
A: A/C and Heating contractors are required by law to hold a current license and follow the state regulations as issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Companies that are licensed and legally able to repair or replace your equipment must have their license number displayed on their paperwork and their company vehicles. If you are in doubt, valid licenses can be confirmed at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website: http://www.license.state.tx.us
Procedures for acquiring permits for work performed at your home is decided by the city in which you live. There are several mechanical code books recognized by the state as acceptable minimal requirements. Individual cities are able to chose which code book will be their guideline and make additional requirements they feel necessary to your specific area. Their goal is the same: to make sure the mechanical codes are met for your city and that compliance for state regulations are satisfied. In short, whether you live in San Antonio, Windcrest or Leon Valley, all require the contractor to purchase a permit and have the work evaluated by that city’s inspector. Each city has it’s own Building and Mechanical department to serve their community and insure safety for it’s residents. County Wide Service can provide all of our customers information on permits pulled at their home and the inspections performed. County Wide Service knows your comfort is important, but your safety is priceless.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has an online form to help you enter a complaint if you have been victimized or solicited by an unlicensed contractor. See http://www.license.state.tx.us/Complaints
